RAMS course November 2025

The RAMS course provides you with a thorough introduction to how RAMS management is used throughout the entire life cycle of railway projects – from concept to operation and maintenance. Through theory and practical examples, you will learn how RAMS contributes to safety, reliability and sustainable solutions.

Purpose

The course provides basic knowledge about RAMS management through all life cycle phases, which activities should be carried out, what results can be expected, and links it to examples from RAMS work in practice. The course will address the benefits, challenges and experiences with RAMS from concept and handover from project to operation and maintenance.

Structure

The RAMS course lasts 4 days and consists of two parts; RAMS theory and RAMS in practice.

Part 1 of the course deals with RAMS theory and is based on the railway-specific RAMS standard, EN 50126. The course part will include a review of the RAMS life cycle model with a focus on the purpose, activities and benefits of the RAMS work within each phase. Other topics for the course part are safety certification, risk assessment, functional safety and roles and project organization. The theory presented in the course are relevant topics that you will encounter in your work with RAMS. In addition, part 1 will lay the foundation for part 2 of the course.

Part 2 of the course deals with RAMS in practice and focuses on RAMS work within the disciplines of rolling stock and signalling/infrastructure. The course will emphasize practical RAMS activities throughout all life cycle phases and highlight experiences, benefits and challenges.

Target group

The course is suitable for those working across all disciplines within rail transport and in various positions that work with or interface with RAMS activities.

Implementation

The course will be conducted as two sessions, each lasting two days, with teaching, joint discussions and assignments.
